Room Heating Calculator BTU
Estimate the heating output needed for your room.
This is the estimated total output for the room, which may be shared between several radiators. Check each radiator's output at your heating system's operating temperatures.
Conservatories need a professional heat-loss assessment. This simple volume-based calculator cannot reliably size heating for them.
This is a guide only. Insulation, glazing, exposure and room layout affect heat loss; consult a qualified heating professional for a room-by-room heat-loss calculation.
How this estimate works
Room volume in cubic feet × 5 BTU/h per cubic foot × room-type, insulation, glazing and outside-wall adjustments. Metres are converted using 35.3147 cubic feet per cubic metre.
Illustrative adjustments: poor insulation +30%, average unchanged, good −20%; single glazing +15%, double unchanged, triple −10%; outside walls: 0 −10%, 1 unchanged, 2 +10%, 3 +20%, 4 +30%. Living room/bedroom unchanged, kitchen +15%, bathroom +25%. Adjustments multiply together.
The displayed range is 85–115% of the estimate, rounded outwards to 100 BTU/h; 1 kW = 3,412.142 BTU/h. This range is illustrative, not a validated accuracy margin. Window area, outdoor design temperature, ventilation and actual building heat-loss measurements are not included.
